Lonnie Holley began making visual art in 1979, when he made two tombstones for his sister's children killed in a house fire. He uses found materials both man-made and from nature, to create assemblages and sculpture which redefine the materials' original cultural associations and meanings by his creative "re-working" of those materials. The works often commemorate places or people Holley has known. He now makes music as well as visual art.
